Minnesota has recorded its second flu-related death of the season. Officials say a woman in her 90s with underlying health problems died of complications from the flu. She was the second Minnesotan to die of the flu in the past two weeks. Hospitalizations due to the flu continue to rise across the state, with more than 120 Minnesotans hospitalized with influenza last week – nearly twice the number of the week before. There were outbreaks in 51 schools across the state as students prepared to go on winter break, including at schools in Sibley, Scott, Carver, Le Sueur and Martin Counties. Only 2 nursing homes reported outbreaks, one of them in Blue Earth County. Health officials say that after several years of unusually mild flu seasons, this season could seem more severe just because it’s normal. Last winter there were 33 flu-related deaths reported in Minnesota.
