The New Ulm Area Emergency Food Shelf has kicked off the holiday food giving period with some big donations from local-area businesses and organizations. On Saturday, the New Ulm High School basketball team delivered 937 pounds of food and $45 in cash to the food shelf. Smiley’s Tavern held its annual food drive on Saturday as well, and that food will be delivered today (MON). Martin Luther College collected over 200 pounds of food last week as well, and the first big donation of the holiday season last week came from the Immanuel Lutheran School in rural Courtland, which raised 382 pounds of food and $20 in cash. The New Ulm food shelf has seen an increasing number of individuals and families coming for food assistance lately, but regular donations from area businesses as well as churches and other organizations are helping meet their needs.
