Two Martin County men are facing criminal charges after being caught “Shining” deer in a Department of Natural Resources sting operation. DNR officers had placed some deer decoys near the intersection of Blue Earth County Roads 20 and 31 southwest of Lake Crystal recently when a pickup truck approached the decoys and aimed its headlights directly at them. As the officers moved in, the driver attempted to leave but was stopped. Inside the truck authorities found an uncased rifle and ammunition, two spotlights, an open case of beer and a flask, a metal baseball bat, three cameras, and a freshly killed raccoon. 20-year-old Britten Kenneth Swanson of Northrup and 19-year-old Trevor Louis Wiederhoeft of Truman are scheduled to make their first appearance in court on December 13th for gross misdemeanor charges of using lights to hunt and misdemeanor charges of hunting with a motor vehicle as well as underage drinking. Swanson is also facing a possible DWI charge.
