A trial date has been set for the Montevideo man accused of murdering a co-worker earlier this year. 25-year-old Darek Nelson is accused of stabbing 18-year-old Vinessa Lozano multiple times outside the Pizza Ranch Restaurant in Montevideo where the 2 worked this past January after she reportedly rejected his romantic advances. He also allegedly threatened a co-worker who tried to help Lozano. Nelson has been charged with 1st -degree premeditated murder, 2nd-degree murder and 2 counts of 2nd-degree assault with a dangerous weapon. He was in court for an omnibus hearing on Friday, and his attorney entered a motion to allow Nelson to plead guilty to 2nd-degree murder, a move which the prosecution is opposed to. If the judge does not accept the guilty plea, a pretrial hearing will take place February 7th prior to his trial beginning on February 25th. Nelson remains in custody with bail set at $1,000,000.
