A rural North Mankato couple are facing a total of six felonies for the alleged starvation of an 8-year-old child. 44-year-old Russell Hauer and his wife Mona have been charged with neglect, endangerment and malicious punishment of a child in Nicollet County Court after authorities were notified of a possible child neglect case by hospital personnel in Mankato. The 8-year-old boy had reportedly been malnourished to the point that he needed to be admitted to the intensive care unit of St. Mary’s Hospital in Rochester. He apparently hadn’t been given solid food for at least two months, and was down to just 34-pounds, the weight of an average 3-year-old. The Hauers also allegedly struck him repeatedly with a broom handle to discipline him. The boy is adopted, and has three siblings, two of which are also adopted.
