A St. James man accused of causing the death of 2 women in a car crash last year has pleaded guilty to two counts of criminal vehicular homicide in an Alford Plea. The plea means that 24-year-old Mark Anders Chalin does not admit guilt in the crime, but does acknowledge there is enough evidence to convict him. Chalin was reportedly driving on Blue Earth County Road 90 with 23-year-old Amber Menezes of Mankato on his lap last August when he crossed the centerline and crashed head-on into 35-year-old Jonna Martin of Lakefield. Both Martin and Menezes were killed in the crash, and Chalin suffered 26 broken bones and a damaged bladder and spent 45 days in the hospital. He says that he agreed to the plea because he couldn’t remember what happened that night. Prosecutors will be asking for a 48-month prison sentence. Sentencing is set for December 10th.
