Candidates for the Nicollet County Board took part in a League of Women Voters Candidate Forum in St. Peter Tuesday. Those involved included District 1 and 2 incumbents Marie Dranttel and Jim Stenson, and their challengers, Terry Genelin and David Johnson. The candidates were asked several questions over the course of the hour-long forum, including how they would continue to provide social services for the nearly one-third of the county in need. Genelin responded that the system needs innovation, and that services should be shared with neighboring communities such as Mankato. Dranttel’s answer was that Nicollet County should be doing more to help troubled kids. David Johnson’s reply was that there are too many social service mandates putting large burdens on the county. Stenson said that the county has little control over much of the money spent on social services. Other questions the candidates fielded during the forum included the role of the county in addressing environmental concerns, how to better share county and city services, what areas of the county’s governmental structure need attention, and more. The forum will be broadcast on 860AM-KNUJ andwww.knuj.net this coming Monday beginning at 5:10pm.
