While the cold and sometimes windy and rainy conditions affected many of the players at the 2012 MIAC Golf Championships, one would think Gustavus’ Alex Kolquist (Hermantown, Minn.) played in perfect conditions after looking at his scorecard. The senior shattered the previous scoring record at the conference tournament by six shots, recording an incredible 9-under-par 207 over the 54 holes, to claim individual medalist honors and lead Gustavus to the men’s team title. For his performance, Kolquist was named the MIAC Men’s Golf Athlete-of-the-Week for the second time this fall.
Behind Kolquist’s magnificent performance, Gustavus ran away with the team title – its first since 2007. The Gusties shot an even 300 Saturday, an excellent 290 Sunday, and finished with a total of 885 to win by 16 shots after Monday’s final-round score of 295. The conference title capped off Gustavus’ fall season. The Gusties will return to the course this spring, which will include a trip to the NCAA Division III National Championships as the MIAC’s automatic qualifier.
