Gustavus senior Trevor Gervais (Fergus Falls, Minn.) was in the lineup for the Gusties’ No. 2 team over the weekend at the team’s home invitational – the Twin Cities Classic – but he played like a first-teamer throughout the 54-hole event, finishing in a tie for second place in an extremely competitive field. Gervais was the top MIAC finisher at the Classic, coming under par over the course of the three-day event. For his performance, Gervais was named the MIAC Men’s Golf Athlete-of-the-Week.
Gervais got off to a strong start and got progressively better throughout the tournament. He opened with a 1-over-par 73, then shot an even-par 72 to remain in contention for one of the top spots. However, Gervais saved his best for last, as the senior shot 2-under-par (70) over the final 18 holes to finish with a three-day total of 215, and a second-place tie at 1-under among a field of 89 individuals. Gervais led the Gustavus Black team to an 11th place finish (out of 17 teams), which was better than two MIAC varsity opponents. This season, Gervais has played in three events for the Gusties, with a 77.3 stroke average – fourth on the team – and one top-five finish.
Gervais and the Gusties – who won the tournament with a three-day total of 879 with their first team – will hope to continue their surge into another big three-day tournament on the schedule this weekend. The 2012 MIAC Golf Championships will be held Saturday, Sunday and Monday at Bunker Hills Golf Course in Coon Rapids, Minn. The first two rounds are scheduled to start at 11:20 a.m., with Monday’s final round set to begin at 9 a.m. The winning team receives the conference title, as well as the MIAC’s automatic bid to the 2013 NCAA Division III Golf Championship.
