Criminal charges have been filed in connection with a fatal rollover near Courtland this past June. Authorities have determined that 21-year-old Derek Lawrence Stavish of Sartell was the driver in the crash which killed 19-year-old Brent Lehnen of Albany. It was originally thought that Lehnen was the driver, but investigators used eyewitness accounts and the placement of the seats in the pickup truck the 2 were in to determine that Stavish had been driving. A warrant was issued for his arrest last week for felony criminal vehicular homicide. He turned himself in and made an appearance in Nicollet County Court on Tuesday, where his bail was set at $10,000 with conditions or $100,000 without. The June 18th crash occurred at about 10:30pm near the intersection of Highway 14 and Nicollet County Road 25 just east of Courtland. Neither man had been wearing a seatbelt, and they were both ejected from the pickup when it left the road and rolled. The 2 had been drinking that evening. Lehnen was dead at the scene while Stavish received non-life threatening injuries. He’ll be back in court December 11th.
