A Nebraska man suffered severe burns in a car accident near Comfrey Sunday afternoon. 74-year-old Lance F. Johnson of Wymore, Nebraska was traveling southbound on 400th Avenue in Brown County when his Mercury Villager van left the road at just after 5:30pm and hit a field approach before driving into the ditch. Fluid then apparently began leaking from the van and it began to burn. Nick Rients of rural Comfrey and Stetson Shoen of Springfield were working in nearby fields when the accident occurred. They were able to free Johnson from the burning vehicle by cutting his seatbelt and moved him to a safe location. He was taken to the Springfield Hospital and then flown to the Regions Hospital Burn Center with severe burns on his left leg. The vehicle was a total loss.
