Fire crews from several departments battled a pair of wildfires in eastern Blue Earth County on Thursday. The fires reportedly started at around 10am just east of Eagle Lake. Investigators say that an apparent failed wheel bearing on a trailer started the 2 separate fires along Highway 14. One burned a swampy area just west of Smiths Mill, while a smaller fire was also burning in the ditch of the highway. Authorities believe both fires were started by the same vehicle and spread quickly due to the dry and windy conditions. Firefighters from Eagle Lake, Madison Lake, St. Clair and Janesville responded. The fires were under control by Noon and no injuries or property damage were reported.
