Royals Rout Twins 12 Sep 12

Kansas City’s Will Smith fired seven shutout innings to lead the Royals to a 9-1 rout of the Twins in the opener of a three-game series at Target Field. Smith struck out seven and walked three while scattering seven hits as he upped his mark to 9-and-7. Lorenzo Cain’s flyball was lost in the twilight by Twins outfielder Josh Willingham and turned into a two-run triple in the second inning. Cain finished a homer short of the cycle and drove in two runs. Ryan Doumit [[ DOE-mitt ]] knocked in the lone run for the Twins, who had won their previous three. Scott Diamond was tagged for four runs and 10 hits in six frames as he fell to 11-and-7. The same two teams play tonight in Minneapolis. Coverage begins at 6:40pm on 860 AM KNUJ and SAM 107.3.
