New Ulm City Councilors spent only 10 minutes taking care of their agenda on Tuesday. During that time the council set the dates for 3 public hearings. A hearing on proposed increases in city liquor license fees will be held November 6th. Hearings on the final assessment rolls for the 2011 Utility, Street and Alley improvements as well as assessments for weed removal will be held October 16th. In other business Tuesday, the Council accepted the donation of a “Fatal Vision Starter Kit” from the Underage Substance Abuse Coalition. The retail value of the 6 goggles simulating varying blood-alcohol levels is over a thousand dollars. The kit will primarily be used by the school resource officer and at different presentations. The council also approved a variance allowing for new storage sheds to be constructed along the New Ulm Bike Trail on the south end of town. Following the brief meeting an informal budget discussion was held as councilors debated possible cuts in order to reduce the proposed 19% tax levy increase for the city. Additional budget work sessions will be held prior to the final public hearings in early December.
