Athletes often refer to being, “in the zone,” and that certainly seems to be the case for Gustavus men’s golfer Andrew Oakes (Hermantown, Minn.) over the last few weeks. The Gustie junior continued his torrid play with a great showing at the 2012 Saint John’s Fall Invitational over the weekend. Oakes was the top MIAC finisher, taking third place overall with a 36-hole score of just one-over-par. For his performance, Oakes was named the MIAC Men’s Golf Athlete-of-the-Week for the second consecutive week.
The Gusties are also off to a good start, with a first-place and third-place finish to their credit after two tournaments. They hope to keep putting up low numbers this weekend with a trip to Eau Claire, Wis., for the UW-Eau Claire Invitational Sunday and Monday. They’ll also play at the Twin Cities Classic Sept. 29-Oct. 1 to prepare for the conference meet. The 2012 MIAC Golf Championships will be held Oct. 6-8 at Bunker Hills, Minn., in Coon Rapids, Minn.
