After a 12-2 home win over Apple Valley on Thursday night, the RV Bullhead 50s lost both games of a doubleheader to the TC Angels of Crystal Sunday afternoon in St. Peter by scores of 7-4 and 7-6.
On Thursday evening, the Bullheads broke open a close 2-2 game after 3 innings with a 7-run 4th. Jeff Knutson, Tom Bruess, Tom Boisen, and Ken Wickelgren all had 2- hit nights and Tom Steinbach, Bruce Jacobs, Tom Lacina, and Boisen scored 2 runs apiece to lead the 14-hit offensive attack. Knutson started on the mound and Steve Wilson worked the final 3 hitless frames fanning 4 Apple Valley hitters.
Sunday afternoon’s frustrating losses were the exact opposite of Thursday’s offensive explosion as the Bullheads struggled to get the timely hit all day it seemed. In the day’s first game, the Angels jumped on losing pitcher Lacina with a 7 hit – 5 run 3rd inning, then added 2 more in the 6th to add a cushion to their 5-4 lead at that time. Dave Johnson’s 3 singles led the 7 hit Bullhead’s offense.
Game two started promising for the Bullheads as starting pitcher Keith Bense retired the side in order in the first. Ray Glynn led off the bottom of the inning with a solid base hit. Following a Jacobs double and a Wilson walk, Johnson was retired on a ground out to the pitcher but both Glynn and Jacobs scored. Brian Donahue drove in Wilson with a base hit to plate the 3rd run of the inning and the Bullheads seemed to have some momentum. Angels’ pitchers then settled into a groove and the Bullheads went hitless until the 6th when Brian Sieve and Wilson hits drove in a pair of runs to knot the game at 6. The Angels worked a walk off losing relief pitcher Donahue to lead off the 7th. They then scored the winning run on a 2 out hit and got the side in order to complete the sweep of the Bullheads.
The 5-5 Bullheads host the Minnesota Saints in their next game at 7:30 Thursday evening in St. Peter.
