The Brown County Board (today) on Tuesday established the county’s preliminary property tax levy for 2013. The proposed levy is a just-under 2% increase over this year, and the county’s budget for 2013 is around a 12% hike. The majority of the increase in the budget is due to the county taking over the maintenance on part of a state highway. Brown County Highway Engineer Wayne Stevens says that the county is in discussions with Mn/DOT to take over work on Highway 258 between Comfrey and Highway 14. The $5.2-million project is in next year’s plans. Without the Highway 258 project there would only be around a half-percent increase in the county’s budget. The 2013 budget and tax levy will be subject to further review this fall, with final adoption scheduled for December 18th.
