The St. Paul Saints got edged on the bottom of Lake Michigan, dropping a 2-1 decision to the Gary SouthShore Railcats. Just-signed Kyle Hurst gave up both runs in four innings of work and the Saints’ bats never got untracked. St. Paul is 39-and-35 this season — 10 games behind division leader Fargo-Moorhead.

Vavra’s Big Season
(Willmar, MN) — The son of Twins hitting coach Joe Vavra is having a great season had a big night in Willmar on Monday. Tanner Vavra was named Player of the Night in the Northwoods League as he went 3-for-5, knocking in four runs and scoring twice as the Alexandria Beetles beat the Willmar Stingers 10-7. Vavra’s accomplishment is amazing since he lost vision in one of his eyes when he was very young. Vavra, who goes to school at Valparaiso, leads the league with a .385 average.
