The New Ulm District 88 School Board on Thursday announced the appointment of a new principal for Washington Elementary and approved 4 years worth of teacher contracts. Les Koppendrayer will officially retire as principal of Franklin Elementary School in Mankato on September 7th, and will begin his duties as interim principal of Washington Elementary School in New Ulm on September 11th. This comes after the recent resignation of former Washington Principal Bill Sprung. Koppendrayer will serve for a year while the district finds permanent replacement for Sprung. Also on Thursday, the board approved contracts for District 88 teachers for 2011 through 2015. The changes include provisions to reflect the switch to a six-period day at New Ulm High School. The district’s contribution to teacher’s health insurance will not increase until next year. There will be step increases and a 1% increase in the salary scale for teachers over each of the next few years.
