A 21-year-old Cokato man was charged with 3 counts of criminal vehicular homicide and other charges on Monday for his involvement in a deadly crash that killed three family members east of Willmar Friday night. The state patrol says that a pickup truck driven by Paul Wickenhauser crossed the centerline on Highway 12 at just after 9pm and collided head-on with a mini-van driven by 68-year-old Marta Stoffers of Atwater. After the collision the van went into the ditch and burned. Stoffers was killed, along with her daughter in-law, 40-year-old Michelle Hoffman of Eden Prairie. Hoffman’s 8-year-old daughter and 5-year-old son were taken to Hennepin County, where the girl later died from her injuries and the boy remains in critical condition. Wickenhauser was treated for only minor injuries. Authorities say there was a broken alcohol container on the roadway and a bottle of rum in the cab of Wickenhauser’s pickup, as well as a cooler with alcoholic beverages in the cargo area of the truck. Wickenhauser reportedly admitted to police that he had been drinking that night. He is scheduled to make his first appearance in court today (TUE).
