The Brown County Sheriff’s Office has issued a warning on a phone scam. Several residents of Brown County have been receiving calls from people identifying themselves as being with the Federal Government, Social Security or Medicare and asking for bank account and other personal information. They then attempt to withdraw money from the victim’s account. Authorities remind residents to never give out bank account or other personal information over the phone to an unknown caller. Many scam artists use fake phone numbers that show up on Caller ID, and representatives of the Federal Government, including Medicare, the IRS and Social Security DO NOT call people on the phone for personal information, nor does your local bank. If you willingly give out your information, criminal charges against the caller are not always possible. The calls should be reported to your local law enforcement agency.
