Around a thousand residents of Martin County received a “Code Red” phone call early Tuesday morning after a police car chase led to a massive manhunt throughout the area. It started when a state trooper attempted to stop a vehicle reported stolen from Oklahoma late Monday evening, sparking a car chase into Martin County. The chase ended south of Sherburn when the vehicle drove through a corn field and hit a drainage ditch. The suspect then fled on foot and the State Patrol and area law enforcement agencies, as well as State Patrol helicopters from the Metro area began searching an area from Highway 4 to the Iowa border. When they failed to locate the suspect a Code Red alert was sent to residents of Ceylon, Dunnell, Sherburn and Welcome at around 2am Tuesday. The suspect remains at large.
