Foreign Lottery Scam 07 Jul 12

The McLeod County Sheriff’s Office has received a number of reports of county residents receiving mailings claiming they have won a prize in a Foreign Lottery or Contest. The letter reportedly asks the “Winner” to make a payment in order to receive their prize. Authorities say this is a scam, and Federal law prohibits the use of mail to sell or buy any lottery materials. They are also reminding residents that if you did not enter a contest, you can’t win it. To report a lottery scam, consumers should contact the Federal Trade Commission, the United State Postal Inspector, or their local law enforcement agency.
