A 23-year-old Sleepy Eye woman faces multiple felony counts of welfare fraud and perjury in Brown County Court. Keshia Weigel was charged with 6 counts of wrongfully obtaining public assistance and 13 counts of perjury last week. She is accused of receiving food stamps, work benefits, and medical and childcare benefits for herself and a child that was no longer living with her, meaning she was not entitled to the benefits. She was also a recipient of the Minnesota Family investment Program. The crimes allegedly occurred for periods of time over the course of 4 years, beginning in 2008.
