Firefighters from several agencies battled a barn fire in rural Sleepy Eye Sunday evening. The fire at the Mike Hoffmann barn on 230th Avenue in Stark Township several miles southeast of Sleepy Eye was reported at just before 7:30pm Sunday. Firefighters from Sleepy Eye and Hanska were the first on the scene, along with officials from the Brown County Sheriff’s Office. New Ulm firefighters were called out for mutual aid at just before 8pm as well. Much of the building was destroyed by the fire, although the livestock in the barn got out before it was engulfed in flames. The fire is believed to have been started by a lightning strike. The amount of damage is still unknown, and an investigation is underway.
