It’s been 14 years since volunteers in Chaska rescued an eaglet whose nest was downed by high winds. Since then, they’ve been left to wonder whatever happened to the bird. Thanks to a curious wildlife photographer, now they know the bird has been nesting in St. Peter. Jon Smithers became obsessed with a banded eagle in late 2003. It took eight years, but over time Smithers’ photographs allowed him to put together the nine digits on the band. The U of M Raptor Center has confirmed that the bird was the eaglet rescued in Chaska, but says it’s highly unusual to get a band ID off an active bird.
