Area veterans are being warned about a new email scam primarily targeting military service members. The fraudulent emails being sent to active members of the military, as well as military retirees and civilian employees, appear to be sent by Defense Finance and Accounting Services, but actually come from a non-government email account. The phony email claims that individuals receiving VA disability compensation can receive additional funds from the IRS by sending personal information to a retired Colonel at an address in Florida. This is a scam, and can be quite costly for victims, because the victim must repay any tax refunds received in error, plus any penalties and interest, and may even face criminal prosecution. Beware of unsolicited offers for refunds or rebates, as well as emails from unfamiliar senders asking for personal information. If you believe someone may have used your Social Security Number fraudulently, notify the IRS immediately.
