A 19-year-old Fairmont man has been charged with 1st-degree arson for allegedly starting a fire at Fairmont’s Lincoln School in April. Timothy Jude Brickner is accused of lighting the curtains of the stage at the school on fire, which then set off alarms as well as an automatic sprinkler system. The alarm triggered an evacuation of the school, with everyone in the building escaping safely. The fire was quickly extinguished, and the state fire marshall’s office was called in to investigate. Officials later learned that Brickner was supposed to be serving an in-school suspension at the school’s alternative learning center that day, but had failed to show up. An eyewitness had spotted him near where the fire started that morning, however. Brickner initially denied starting the fire, but reportedly said he would confess when he learned there was an eyewitness. He faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison and a $35,000 fine.
