Many people with newer smartphones will soon be automatically texted when officials issue public safety alerts. Included are presidential alerts, amber alerts, and alerts of imminent threats — including severe weather. State Homeland Security and Emergency Management Director Kris Eide says you’ll receive the alert based on where you are at that moment, and not where you live. Eide says people can have all the alerts except the presidential one turned off on their phone, but she does not recommend it.
