A 19-year-old Franklin man faces criminal charges in Nicollet County for allegedly sending text messages prior to a car crash in Klossner in September. Four people were injured in the crash on Highway 15 north of New Ulm that day. An eastbound Chevy pickup truck driven by John Rebstock of Franklin pulled out onto 15 directly in front of a Chevy Tahoe driven by 34-year-old Jason Brown of South Haven. Both drivers and the 2 passengers in the Tahoe suffered minor injuries. An investigation of Rebstock’s phone found that he had sent 3 text messages in the minutes leading up to the crash, and was apparently in the process of composing another when the collision occurred. It is illegal to text while driving in Minnesota. Rebstock admitted to sending and receiving text messages while he was driving, but said he had stopped before the crash. He faces a gross misdemeanor charge of criminal vehicular operation with injury and a petty misdemeanor charge of texting while driving, and is scheduled to appear in court July 24th.
