The 2012 MIAC Baseball Playoffs came to an end Sunday with a second-straight day of perfect weather at Veterans Field in Minnetonka, Minn. Second-seeded Saint John’s had one chance at the title slip through its fingers, but the Johnnies redeemed themselves with a stirring performance in the winner-take-all final game to claim their first-ever MIAC postseason title.
No. 1-seeded St. Thomas (34-8) – ranked No. 2 in all of Division III – continued rolling with the momentum it generated Saturday, scoring a 6-3 victory in must-win fashion in Sunday’s first game to force the second and final game of the Playoffs. The Tommies got on the board first in finale, but a sudden Saint John’s (29-14) surge propelled the regular-season runners-up to a 10-5 championship victory in Head Coach Jerry Haugen’s 35th season.
In addition to the postseason title, Saint John’s receives the MIAC’s automatic bid to the 2012 NCAA Division III Baseball Tournament. St. Thomas – thanks to its outstanding regular season, No. 2 national ranking and MIAC regular-season title – is fully expected to join the Johnnies in the field. The postseason details will be announced by the NCAA Sunday evening at 7 p.m. online.
