A severe thunderstorm blew through the area Wednesday afternoon, with gusts of wind reaching upwards of 75 miles-per-hour and causing major damage in some locations. One of the areas hit the hardest was the western edge of New Ulm, where a burst of wind and rain at around 4:45pm blew over semi-trucks and air-conditioning units, and also blew out the windows on dozens of cars at Kohls Weelborg Chevrolet. General Manager Doug Shablin says that the storm came out of nowhere and turned everything white. He says they were unable to see any of the cars in the dealership at that time, but that there were at least 70 cars with broken windows from the storm, and more than 100 that took damage of some kind. The storm also knocked out power in some areas, including in Lafayette and Bernadotte in Nicollet County. Numerous trees around the local area were downed by the strong winds as well. New Ulm has received around 3-inches of rain in the last 24 hours.
