Officials in Chippewa County filed a motion on Wednesday asking that a grand jury be convened in the stabbing death of an 18-year-old woman in Montevideo earlier this year. 24-year-old Darek Jon Nelson of Montevideo remains in custody for the stabbing, and has been charged with 2nd-degree murder, 1st-degree manslaughter and 2nd-degree assault for the death of Vinessa Lozano on January 13th. The incident occurred as Lozano left the Pizza Ranch in Montevideo, where the 2 were co-workers. Authorities claim that Nelson planned his actions, and was upset at the time because Lozano did not have feelings for him. A grand jury is required in order to bring an indictment for 1st-degree murder, which then carries a maximum penalty of life in prison. Officials are asking that the Chippewa County grand jury be convened on May 15th. A decision is expected soon.
