The New Ulm Police Department reports that a standoff at a home on North Broadway last week was a mental health issue. Authorities closed off a section of 5th North Street between Broadway and Minnesota Street in New Ulm Wednesday night after Dan Vanderlouw refused to leave his home on the 400 block of North Broadway. The standoff ended after approximately an hour and a half when police breached the front door with a battering ram and riot shields and took Vanderlouw into custody. No one was injured, and no weapons were involved. Vanderlouw was at the Brown County Jail until Thursday, when he was taken to the New Ulm Medical Center for treatment. He has been charged with domestic assault and making terroristic threats.
