The New Ulm City Council on Tuesday appointed Lisa Fischer to fill the vacant Ward 2 council seat left empty by the resignation of Councilor Todd Olson. Fischer has previous experience working for the city from more than 20 years with the PUC. The seat will be on the ballot this November, but Fisher has not decided if she will run for the position at that time. In other business Tuesday, the council tabled a motion to repair or replace the decorative pavers on sidewalks and crosswalks in downtown New Ulm. Public Works Superintendent Tom Patterson says the deteriorating pavers can actually be worse aesthetically than plain concrete. The council will decide between replacing the pavers or going back to just concrete, but the issue was tabled for a month to allow for input from downtown businesses and the New Ulm Heritage Preservation Commission.
