New Historical Markers Approved 16 May 12

The Brown County Board on Tuesday approved a Brown County Historical Society request for a total of 4 new markers detailing aspects of the US-Dakota War of 1862. The new historical markers and their locations include: “The Attack on the Brown Family” marker along County Road 24 a mile west of Leavenworth; the “Jonathan Brown and the Shetek Trail” marker on Country Road 24 two miles east of Springfield; the “Dakota Reservation and the Leavenworth Road” marker on 280th Avenue two miles southwest of Sleepy Eye, and the “Milford Reservation Line” marker on County Road 29. The first 3 markers have all been funded, with the funding for the 4th being finalized. The hope is to have all 4 installed prior to Brown County’s commemoration of the Dakota Conflict August 20th through the 26th.
