The 12-player Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) All-Tournament Team for the 2012 MIAC Softball Playoffs was announced Monday, May 7, following the weekend’s competition. Headlining the honor squad was MIAC Playoffs MVP Kendra Bowe from tournament-champion St. Thomas.
Bowe – the Tommies’ terrific freshman pitcher – earned her MVP award after going 3-1 with a pair of complete-game shutouts to help UST capture the title. In all, she allowed just six runs (four earned) over 22.0 innings pitched with 14 hits allowed, seven walks and 14 strikeouts. Both of her shutouts came against runner-up Gustavus, including a five-inning one-hitter in St. Thomas’ 8-0 victory in Saturday’s final championship game. Bowe also threw a three-hit, five-inning shutout against the Gusties in the second round Friday.
The champion Tommies placed six players on the 12-member team. Runner-up Gustavus had three players honored, third-place Saint Mary’s had two players chosen and fourth-place Augsburg placed one on the All-tournament Team. There was only one senior and two juniors on the youthful team, as five sophomores and four freshmen were selected.
St. Thomas has now won the double-elimination tournament – held this year May 4-5 at Rice Creek Fields in Shoreview, Minn. – in each of the event’s nine seasons with a 27-1 all-time MIAC Playoffs record. The Tommies advanced through Friday unscathed, then bounced back from a loss to Gustavus with an 8-0 win over the Gusties to claim the championship. As a result of the title, St. Thomas received the MIAC’s automatic bid to the 2012 NCAA Division III Softball Tournament.
The All-Tournament Team was voted on by the four participating coaches following the conclusion of the MIAC Playoffs.
