The Martin County Board learned this week that the county has been denied a federal grant needed to complete mandatory emergency communication upgrades by the end of the year. The FEMA grant would have covered several of the 800-megahertz “ARMER” portable radios to be used by Fairmont Fire Department rescue units and ambulance services. The move to the narrowband radios must be completed by all law enforcement and rescue agencies by January 1st of 2013. The majority of counties in the local area have been approved for the FEMA grants, although McLeod and Sibley have also been denied. Martin County Commissioners plan on sending letters to state and federal lawmakers asking for funding for the mandatory equipment.
