Diablo 3 Slashes Record for One-Day PC Sales 25 May 12

Even after more than a decade since Blizzard’s last Diablo installment, gamer interest in the action-RPG franchise has not waned. Fans proved just how anxiously they’ve been waiting by buying up more than 3.5 million copies of Diablo 3 in the first 24 hours of its release. This number easily makes it the fastest selling PC game in history, and it doesn’t even include the 1.2 million players who received the game free as part of a World of Warcraft promotion.

Still, the launch wasn’t without some serious hiccups as many players grumbled about jammed servers, glitches, log-in issues, and an annoying “always-online” requirement (which poses a real problem when servers are down). Of course, these errors didn’t go unmentioned on the message boards, and many frustrated gamers turned to review sites, such as Metacritic, to voice their complaints.

Undoubtedly sensing a serious backlash primed by a twelve-year wait, Blizzard was quick to take action, and to its credit, was able to remedy most of the server issues within the first week (although, it appears the restrictive online requirement is here to stay — for piracy protection).

In response to the problems, CEO Mike Morhaime issued a statement saying, “We’re definitely thrilled that so many people around the world were excited to pick up their copy of Diablo 3 and jump in the moment it went live. We also regret that our preparations were not enough to ensure everyone had a seamless experience when they did so. I want to reaffirm our commitment to make sure the millions of Diablo 3 players out there have a great experience with the game moving forward,”

Despite the rough launch, sales of Diablo 3 don’t appear to have taken a hit as it has now surpassed the 6.3 million copies sold mark and is steadily climbing. Most critics have offered positive reviews and praised the game’s “graphics, sound, cinematics, and polished gameplay.”

On a side note, it seems even all the diehard PC fans in the world can’t break the one-day record for the most sold copies of any game — that honor belongs to the multi-platform game, Call of Duty: Modern Warefare 3, and its 6.5 million copies.
