Brown County Phone Scam 22 May 12

Authorities have issued a warning about a new phone cam reported Monday. A resident of Brown County reportedly received two phone calls telling her that she had won $250,000 in a Publisher’s Clearing House Sweepstakes, and that she needed to go to Walgreen’s in New Ulm and purchase an “activation card” for $150 in order to claim her prize. Walgreen’s says that there are no current promotions with Publisher’s Clearing House, and that the company does not have “activation cards” for sweepstakes. The rural New Ulm resident that was targeted by this scam had not entered any sweepstakes or lotteries recently, so was aware this was a scam. Remember that you can’t win something you did not enter, and that if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is. The Brown County Sheriff’s Office says that recipients of scam phone calls should hang up.
