The man accused of trying to kill his mother in a park south of St. Peter recently made an appearance in Nicollet County Court on Tuesday. 48-year-old Burton James Ewing Jr is facing 5 felony counts for the May 8th attack, including attempted murder. He is accused of stabbing his mother more than 20 times at Seven Mile Creek Park while out on a day-pass from the St. Peter Regional Treatment Center. Ewing’s mother was airlifted to the Twin Cities following the attack and he was taken into custody. His attorney says they plan to use mental illness as a defense. He is currently diagnosed with a schizoaffective disorder, and was reportedly displaying signs of mental illness during an interview with authorities shortly after the attack. His next court date has not been set. Ewing was sent to the St. Peter Treatment Center after beating his sister to death in 1998 and being found not guilty due to mental illness.
