Three students from Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter remain hospitalized in Illinois after a head-on crash on Interstate 39 Friday night that left an 85-year-old man dead. A group of 9 Gustavus students traveling in two vehicles were on their way to Florida for spring break trip when the elderly man from Cleveland, Ohio, struck the first of the 2 vehicles head-on while driving the wrong way on the interstate. The second vehicle of students couldn’t stop in time and rear-ended the first vehicle. Gustavus student John Anderson of Appleton, Wisconsin, is in critical condition at St. Francis Medical Center in Peoria. Adyn Clausen of St. Louis Park is in serious condition, and Jacob Klem of Mahtomedi is in fair condition. Another student was treated and released, and none of the students in the second vehicle were injured. The name of the 85-year-old man who died has not been released. The crash remains under investigation.
