The New Ulm Sertoma Club has announced the winners of the organization’s annual Service To Mankind Award. John and Anne Makepeace moved to New Ulm in the year 2000 and began rehabilitating the Grand Hotel downtown, which was owned by Anne’s great-great-great-grandfather. The Grand Kabaret then opened in 2010 as a showcase for local and regional entertainers, and work continues on converting portions of the building into the Grand Center for the Arts, which will include studios, galleries, performance venues, and more. John Makepeace has served on the City Planning Commission as well, and Anne Makepeace was a founding member of the New Ulm Retail Development Corporation and has served on the Heritage Preservation Commission. The two will be honored by the New Ulm Sertoma Club during a banquet at the New Ulm Country Club on Thursday, May 10th.
