NU Schools Cut Teachers 13 Apr 12

The New Ulm District 88 School Board on Thursday continued to make cuts to the district’s faculty in an effort to balance the budget. Last month the school board approved more than $1.1-million worth of budget cuts, including the elimination of 10 full-time teaching positions. On Thursday the board placed 5 tenured teachers on unrequested leaves of absence and 3 non-tenured teachers learned that their contracts will not be renewed. Also on Thursday the District 88 School Board approved of increasing rental fees for the use of school facilities. The new fees will be listed on the district’s web site. The board also learned that no progress has been made in contract negotiations with teachers, and the sides are heading for mediation on May 17th.
