Democratic State Representative Lyle Koenen of Clara City was the winner of the Special Election to fill the District 20 state Senate seat formerly held by the late Senator Gary Kubly on Tuesday. Koenen received over 54% of the votes in the 3-way race with 3,914. Republican Gregg Kulberg of rural Hector received 40% of the votes with 2,912, and the Independence Party’s Leon Greenslit of Olivia received 5% with 365 votes. Koenen will now complete Kubly’s term in the current legislative session after the 3-term Democrat passed away from Lou Gehrig’s Disease on March 2nd. District 20 covers Renville, Chippewa, Big Stone, Lac Qui Parle, Yellow Medicine and Lincoln Counties.
