Law enforcement officers from across the state, and their dogs, are in Nicollet County this week as part of a training seminar for police narcotics canines. Frandsen Bank in lower North Mankato was a training site for the police dogs on Thursday. It was one of several training events about 35 officers and their canine partners will be participating in over several days. The dogs are trained to identify the smell of narcotics, including contaminated cash, and the money at the bank was being used to train the dogs to react only to the smell of narcotics, and not other smells. The dogs are training in St. Peter today (FRI), and certification testing will take place Saturday. That will include searching for drugs at St. Peter High School, in parked vehicles, and at other locations.
