The 2012 winners of the New Ulm Human Rights Commission annual poster and essay contests will be honored during the commission’s meeting next week. The topic for the contests this year was “Compare and contrast the right that young people your age in your community take for granted that may not be as readily available to young people in other areas of the United States or around the world.” Students had to reference the United Nations Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the US Bill of Rights and the Minnesota Human Rights Act. More than 150 entries were submitted. The winning essay was written by New Ulm High School 7th-Grader Desirae Hertling. The 1st Place Poster was done by Washington Elementary 6th-Grader Lauren Schueler. The top 3 winners in each category will be recognized during the New Ulm Human Rights Commission meeting on Monday at 4:30 at City Hall, and the public can view all of the poster submissions at the New Ulm Public Library beginning next Wednesday.
