A Gustavus Adolphus College graduate has been named the winner of the 2012 Walt Whitman Award by the Academy of American Poets. Matt Rasmussen is a 1998 graduate of the St. Peter college who is currently serving as a visiting instructor in the English department. The prestigious Walt Whitman Award is given out annually to an American poet who has yet to publish a book of poetry. Rasmussen won for his manuscript “Black Aperture.” He will receive a $5,000 cash prize as well as a one-month residency at the Vermont Studio Center. His will also have his book of poems published by Louisiana State University Press.
