A 23-year-old man is being called a hero after jumping into an icy lake in Yellow Medicine County this week and rescuing an elderly driver from his sunken pickup. Evan Wintz spotted the sinking pickup in Tyson Lake and realized it was occupied. Wintz jumped into the lake and swam about 30 yards to help 84-year-old Harlan Schwerin out of the vehicle. The truck was completely submerged in 8 feet of water, but the 2 were able to stand on top of the truck in waist-deep water until rescuers arrived. Schwerin was treated for his injuries at the Marshall Hospital and later released.
