Authorities are investigating the death of a 41-year-old St. James man at the Brown County detox center in New Ulm this week. Brad Gertsema was arrested for suspicion of driving while intoxicated Sunday afternoon following a report of a disturbance at a St. James residence. Gertsema was initially brought to the Watonwan County Jail, but was then transferred to the Brown County Evaluation Center, where he was found dead at around 2am Monday morning. The New Ulm Police Department is investigating the death, and is not commenting on whether foul play is suspected. Autopsy results are pending. The Minnesota Department of Human Services is also investigating the death to determine whether the center’s staff followed health and safety policies.
